Atlantic County, N.J. — Authorities are warning residents about a text message scam impersonating the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. The fraudulent messages claim to be from the NJMVC and typically state there is an issue with a driver’s license or vehicle registration. Atlantic County Prosecutor Will Reynolds confirmed that the scheme is a form of SMiShing, a tactic used to deceive victims via text in order to access personal identity and financial information. Scammers often direct recipients to click on malicious links disguised as official notifications.
The NJMVC does not send unsolicited messages about licensing or registration. The agency only texts users to confirm or remind them of scheduled appointments. Similar scams have recently targeted EZ-Pass and New Jersey toll service users with fake account alerts. Residents who receive these fraudulent texts are urged not to reply or click any links. Do not provide any personal or financial details. To report suspicious texts, forward them to 7726 (SPAM) from any mobile phone. For accurate information about driver services, residents should visit the official NJMVC site at nj.gov/mvc.
