AVALON, N.J. — The Avalon Borough Council has introduced an updated ordinance to refine the requirements for business registration and insurance filings. This new ordinance, presented on April 23, introduces a "cure" option that allows business owners to resolve past violations of registration and insurance rules from 2023 without facing penalties. The proposed changes allow businesses that failed to meet previous filing deadlines to avoid prosecution and fines by submitting the necessary documentation, including a business registration certificate and proof of liability insurance, by August 1. Penalties for non-compliance could range from $500 to $5,000. The ordinance clarifies that this "cure" option applies only to past violations and does not impact future filings, which will continue to be required annually.
In addition, the new ordinance stipulates that businesses, including residential rental units, must register, obtain licenses, and complete appropriate inspections. The requirement to update insurance filings annually will begin June 1, with registrations for the previous and current years due on May 1. A public hearing and potential vote on the proposed updates will take place at the May 28 Borough Council meeting at 4 p.m. at Borough Hall.
