NEW JERSEY — Health officials issued swimming advisories Thursday for a bay beach and two lakes in New Jersey due to elevated bacteria levels. The bay beach affected is in Lower Township, Cape May County, near Baywyn Road. The lakes under advisory are Cedar Lake in Denville, Morris County, and Anona Lake in Upper Saddle River, Bergen County. No beaches in the state are currently closed. The advisories were prompted by water samples taken Wednesday that showed enterococci bacteria counts exceeding the safety threshold of 104 colony-forming units. Enterococci is a bacteria used as an indicator of potential contamination from human or animal waste in bathing waters. Under state guidelines, beaches placed under advisory are tested again the following day. If bacteria levels remain above the limit, swimming restrictions are enforced until water quality improves.
