CAPE MAY, New Jersey — Cape May City Council will vote Tuesday on an ordinance to ban dogs from the new nature trail through the marsh. The trail opened in June and offers visitors views of Cape Island Creek and wildlife like osprey and herons. Part of the path runs behind Cape May Elementary School, raising safety concerns among council members about dogs near children. The amended ordinance prohibits dogs on the trail at all times and requires clear signage.
Some residents oppose the ban, citing other city dog restrictions and requesting a compromise. City officials pointed to a nearby dog park, which will be moved closer to the trail entrance. The $1.9 million project includes ADA-compliant paths, an elevated boardwalk, viewing platforms, and shade structures. The site was once a coal power plant that required cleanup. The nature trail is part of larger Lafayette Street Park improvements. Future phases include sports courts, parking upgrades, and a new public safety building. Plans for the building will be presented Tuesday afternoon at City Hall.
