CREST HAVEN, N.J. — Cape May County commissioners have notified the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) that they will not renew the lease to operate Cape May Airport when it expires in 2029.
The DRBA currently leases the approximately 1,000-acre airport property for $1 per year and manages airport operations. The county gave formal notice in 2024 to end the automatic renewal option for another 30 years, meeting the required 60-month notification period. After the lease expires, Cape May County will regain full control of the airport and collect revenues currently earned by the DRBA from outside vendors.
The DRBA has invested over $30 million in airport improvements, which the county plans to reimburse through bond issuance following the lease’s conclusion. Separately, developers have presented plans to build a 100,000-square-foot domed sports complex on airport property. The project would be privately funded and would not require county investment. The county has indicated that updates on the transition will be provided as more information becomes available, with communications subject to public meeting laws.
