Cape May County's New Affordable Housing Community Opens

CAPE MAY, N.J. — A new residential community in Cape May County is providing a solution to the affordable housing crisis in southern New Jersey. The La Mer Beachfront Resort owners have taken over the former Whispering Woods Motel property, located on Route 47 in Middle Township. This 4.79-acre site, previously used for short-term rentals, will now be known as Green Creek Commons and will focus on long-term affordable housing. The property, originally built in 1965, was sold for $1.5 million in the winter of 2024-25. The new ownership has made significant upgrades, including both exterior and interior improvements, with the goal of providing year-round living in a professionally managed and welcoming environment. Green Creek Commons, located just a ten-minute drive from Rio Grande’s shopping and dining, will no longer accept weekly or monthly rentals. The rebranding of the property marks a fresh start for a community designed to support a lifestyle rooted in comfort, affordability, and connection. The change in ownership aligns with the broader effort to address housing needs for working-class and lower-middle-class families in New Jersey. In a statement on their Facebook page, La Mer Beachfront Resort emphasized their dedication to creating a place that feels like home for those in need of long-term housing options.
