Cape May, NJ — This summer, Cape May National Wildlife Refuge is offering a wide range of programs designed to connect families and visitors with nature. The offerings include activities for all ages, from hands-on art workshops to guided nature walks. One of the highlights is the Plein Air Watercolor Workshop, which will be held on Thursday, July 17, and Thursday, August 20, from 1 PM to 3 PM. Participants are invited to meet at the Visitor Center, with supplies provided or attendees encouraged to bring their own. A $10 donation is appreciated, and registration is required due to limited seating. For younger attendees, Nature Art sessions will take place on Thursday, July 17, and August 14, at 10 AM. These free, hands-on classes allow school-aged children and their accompanying adults to explore nature through crafts, painting, and collage. Pre-registration is also required for this program, which has a limited number of spots. Another fun offering is Nature Story Hour, held every Wednesday at 9:30 AM from June 25 to August 20. This program welcomes children ages 3 and up for a storytelling session, followed by themed crafts and activities. No registration is needed for this program. For families and nature enthusiasts, Weekly Nature Walks are held every Saturday at 9 AM. These easy, educational hikes allow guests of all ages to explore the refuge’s diverse habitats. Binoculars are available for those interested in bird watching, and no sign-up is needed. The Bike and Hike program encourages visitors to cycle to the refuge anytime between 9 AM and 12 PM, Wednesday through Monday. After registering at the Nature Center and completing an activity, participants will receive a free sports pack as a thank-you. In addition to these regular programs, Ranger Olivia is leading a series of Wild Walks, where guests can explore various trails and learn about the wildlife and ecosystems within the refuge. Walks are scheduled throughout July and August. Other unique ranger-led activities include Secrets of the Beach, Summer Egg Hunt, and Explaining Decline. The Nature Visitor Center is open Wednesday through Monday from 9 AM to 3 PM, offering educational displays, interactive exhibits, and opportunities to earn a Junior Wildlife Refuge Badge.
