Former Middle Township Mayor and Cape May County Official Daniel Lockwood Dies at 57

COURT HOUSE, NEW JERSEY — Daniel Lockwood, a former Middle Township mayor, Republican Party leader, and Cape May County director of facilities and services, passed away suddenly on June 22 at age 57 due to complications from a stroke. Lockwood was a transformative figure in local politics, becoming the first Republican elected to the Middle Township Committee in 47 years in 2009. He served two terms on the committee and was Middle Township’s first Republican mayor in 74 years from 2012 to 2013. He also led the Middle Township Regular Republican Organization from 2020 to 2025.
A longtime resident of downtown Cape May Court House, Lockwood earned a degree in accounting from Rowan University and worked most recently as Cape May County’s director of facilities and services. Peers and colleagues remembered Lockwood for his political courage, dedication to community, and candid leadership style. His contributions were credited with historic changes in Middle Township’s governance and lasting regional impact. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and daughters Megan and Danielle.
