STRATHMERE, NJ — Twisties Tavern on the Bay, a beloved landmark in Strathmere, is now up for sale, marking the next chapter in its storied history. The bar, originally opened as the Strathmere Inn Cafe in 1929 during Prohibition, has weathered nearly a century of challenges and change, thriving despite the odds.
Founded by Harold and Gert Charleston, the bar had a secretive, speakeasy-style operation during the 1920s, with rumors of visits from infamous figures like Al Capone. Since then, it has become a local legend, surviving through New Jersey’s tough bar and restaurant industry. The current owners, Gary and Denise Riordan, have successfully run the tavern for the past 25 years and are now listing the business for nearly $5 million through Goldcoast Sotheby’s International Realty.
The price includes the business, equipment, liquor license, and everything needed to keep the tavern running. With its casual, friendly atmosphere, Twisties Tavern attracts a steady stream of both locals and tourists, offering an eclectic menu, good drinks, and a one-bedroom apartment for rental above the tavern.
Despite multiple offers with different intentions, the current owners are eager to find someone with restaurant experience to continue the bar’s legacy. The goal is for the new owner to build upon the history rather than alter it, ensuring the tavern remains a staple for generations to come.
