Millsboro, DE — The legal and law enforcement communities in New Jersey are reflecting on the life and legacy of John F. Callinan, a career public servant whose influence spanned courtrooms and county offices for more than half a century. Callinan died at his Millsboro Delaware home on July 31. He was 90. Known by colleagues as a steady leader with an eye for detail, Callinan shaped local justice as both a Superior Court judge and the elected sheriff of Cape May County. Many remember his hands-on approach: before ascending to the bench, Callinan worked as a state trooper—Badge #1577—and served with the Bergen County Police, experience that informed his nuanced perspective on the law. His career began in Edgewater, New Jersey, where, after earning law degrees from Seton Hall and Fordham, he co-founded a practice in Wildwood. Later, as sheriff, he guided Cape May County through significant changes in law enforcement priorities, emphasizing public safety and organizational professionalism during his two terms. Callinan’s appointment to the bench marked a turning point. For two decades presiding over cases in Cape May and Atlantic counties, he became known for equitable decisions and an even-handed judicial style, earning respect from attorneys on both sides of the aisle.
Beyond the badge and gavel, Callinan’s curiosity spanned from aviation to technology, pursuing certification as a private pilot and exploring early computing at home. Those close to him say he never lost his enthusiasm for learning or mentorship. He is survived by his wife, Suzann; daughter, Tricia Ann and her husband, Jimmy; brother, William and his wife, Helene, along with nieces and nephews. A community celebration of Callinan’s life is planned for September 14 at the Cape May Winery, reflecting his enduring connection to the region he served. Memorial contributions are requested for the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Trust and Cape May Kiwanis, two organizations reflecting his lasting commitment to service and local impact.
