COURT HOUSE, N.J. – A Superior Court judge has temporarily blocked Wildwood Crest from withdrawing from the $54 million Hereford Inlet to Cape May Inlet Coastal Storm Risk Management Project, following a legal challenge from North Wildwood. The ruling, issued on March 18 by Judge Susan Shepherd, maintains the status quo while the case moves forward. The project, led by the Army Corps of Engineers and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), calls for a 16-foot dune spanning the barrier island, covering North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, Wildwood, and Lower Township. While North Wildwood and Lower Township reaffirmed their commitment, Wildwood Crest formally opposed it, and Wildwood officials had yet to announce their stance.
Wildwood Crest officials argue the project would push the high-water line dangerously close to the borough’s bike path, posing safety concerns and reducing available beach space. Meanwhile, Wildwood officials raised concerns that the plan would move the waterline 775 feet toward the boardwalk, affecting beach operations. Despite opposition, Lower Township remains committed, citing the protection of over 1,200 housing units in Diamond Beach. The project, fully funded by federal and state governments, includes scheduled beach replenishment every four years. A court hearing on the matter is expected within a month.
