ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY — Early Sunday, two officers were injured when a Millville man fired a shot and then rammed their patrol vehicle, police confirmed. John Melendez, 25, faces multiple charges including possession of a stolen firearm, aggravated assault on officers, resisting arrest, and eluding police. Detectives heard gunfire near the 200 block of Turnpike Road around 3:10 a.m. A witness reported a man armed with a gun getting into a vehicle. Instead of stopping, Melendez made a U-turn and sped toward the officers, ignoring commands to halt. He crashed into a marked patrol car driven by Officers Bayron Zelaya-Chavez and Ivaylo Penchev. Both officers sustained injuries but are expected to recover. Police found a loaded handgun inside Melendez’s vehicle that was reported stolen from Atlanta. Evidence of gunfire was recovered near the initial scene. Melendez was taken into custody and remains jailed in Atlantic County pending further charges.
