NEW SEAWALL TO EXTEND PROTECTION AND BEACHES IN NORTH WILDWOOD

NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. — The city of North Wildwood is set to receive a new seawall extension as part of a broader effort to combat severe beach erosion and enhance shore protection. The seawall, currently wrapping around the north end of the island, will be extended southward from Third to Seventh Streets, reinforcing the beachfront and increasing recreational space.
This development follows a recent settlement between North Wildwood and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, which resolved a decade-long dispute over beach maintenance and reef replenishment. The agreement includes a full island-wide beach replenishment project, funded largely by the state, scheduled to begin in 2025. The city will contribute approximately $7 million toward the improvements, while the state will cover $50 million. The project also retains existing steel bulk-heading plates installed during emergency measures and plans to cap the seawall with a flat surface for expanded use. Beach nourishment will involve hydraulic placement of sand slurry, a method considered more resilient than previous efforts involving dry sand trucking. Officials expect the combined seawall and beach replenishment work to significantly strengthen North Wildwood’s shoreline defenses, supporting tourism and local economy while safeguarding property from ocean storms. For additional details and updates on North Wildwood shoreline projects, monitoring city announcements is recommended.
