VILLAS, N.J. — Wildlife officials and animal control services are asking for the public’s help identifying those responsible for injuring a turtle and removing her hatchlings from a nesting site in Lower Township. According to Shore Animal Control, the incident happened Tuesday at the Cox Hall Creek Wildlife Management Area, a popular recreation site in Villas known for its trails, sunflower field, and fishing areas. The turtle was allegedly harmed and her eggs or babies taken from the area, reportedly by a group of juveniles. The case has prompted strong concern during what experts say is peak nesting season. During this time of year, turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in warm, soft soil. The nesting process is delicate, and disturbing turtles or their nests can have lasting impacts on local wildlife populations. Hatchlings typically remain in their nests for up to two months before making their way to nearby waterways. Shore Animal Control, which serves multiple communities in Cape May, Atlantic, and Cumberland counties, said the matter has been reported to Lower Township Police. Officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. Reports can be made anonymously by calling 1-800-351-1822 or contacting the Lower Township Police Department directly.
