Cape May, N.J. — Dolphins are a frequent summer sight off the Jersey Shore, especially near Cape May where warm waters attract them. Tour boats offer visitors a chance to see the animals in their natural habitat. Officials at the Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center warn boaters and jet ski riders to maintain at least 150 feet from dolphins to avoid disturbing them. Federal regulations prohibit feeding or harassing the marine mammals. Experts say close approaches and circling behaviors by vessels disrupt dolphin swimming patterns and cause distress. When dolphins approach, boat operators are advised to put their vessels in neutral and allow the animals to pass safely. Maintaining distance helps protect the dolphins while still allowing people to enjoy observing these creatures responsibly.
