Pop Lloyd Stadium Reopens After $5.6 Million Renovation

Atlantic City, N.J. – Pop Lloyd Stadium, named after legendary baseball player John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, will reopen on April 29 as a multipurpose sports facility. City officials, including Mayor Marty Small Sr., will lead the reopening ceremony for the stadium, which fell into disrepair in the 1990s. The revamped facility at N. Indiana and Huron avenues will host a variety of sports, including baseball, football, soccer, and other field events. Key upgrades include artificial blue turf, new dugouts, locker rooms, bleachers, restrooms, lighting, and a new scoreboard. The $5.6 million renovation project began on June 17, 2024.
Funding for the project includes $4 million from the American Rescue Plan, $1 million from the 2022 Supplemental Transitional Aid, and an additional $601,450 from the state of New Jersey. Weatherby Construction Co., based in Atlantic City, is the contractor overseeing the project. Pop Lloyd Stadium was originally built in the late 1940s and was named after John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, a Hall of Fame baseball player. Lloyd, considered one of the greatest shortstops of his time, played for the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants in 1924 and 1925. He spent much of his life in Atlantic City, where he passed away in 1964.
