NORTHFIELD —  Approximately 600 people gathered outside U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s office to voice their concerns over his recent vote in favor of a bill proposing significant spending cuts and tax cuts. The proposed bill, approved on Feb. 25, outlines a minimum of $1.5 trillion in cuts and up to $4.5 trillion in new tax cuts over the next decade. Although the bill does not specify which programs will be affected, analysts suggest that Medicaid and other large programs may face reductions. Van Drew, who voted to advance the bill, reassured his constituents that he would not support cuts to essential health programs, including Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid. Despite this, many in the crowd expressed frustration with his stance and his refusal to meet with constituents. They cited concerns over cuts to critical services, particularly Medicaid, which affects 1.9 million people in New Jersey. The protest included chants and signs criticizing Van Drew’s support for the bill and his alignment with the Trump administration. Organizers emphasized the importance of holding elected officials accountable and the need for action to protect vulnerable communities from further harm. The protest concluded with calls for continued advocacy and engagement with the political process.
