Public Voices Concerns Over Cape May County Commissioners’ Conduct During Meetings

CREST HAVEN, NEW JERSEY — Cape May County commissioners faced criticism last week amid allegations of rude and dismissive behavior toward residents during public meetings. Earlier this year, the board implemented Rules of Order limiting public expressions such as clapping, booing, and shouting, and restricting speech deemed disruptive or slanderous. Despite these rules, at the June 24 meeting, several members of the public accused commissioners of showing disrespect through eye-rolling, dismissive comments, and remarks audible on microphones. Residents expressed frustration over perceived intimidation tactics and a lack of respect during previous meetings, particularly surrounding politically charged discussions about Medicaid and race. They urged commissioners to treat citizens and each other with greater respect. The commissioners acknowledged the public comments but did not offer direct responses.
