Respecting the American Flag in Cape May County

CAPE MAY COUNTY, N.J. – As you travel through Cape May County, it’s impossible not to notice the American flag waving proudly outside businesses and homes. While the flag is a symbol of patriotism and pride, it’s important to remember the proper way to display and retire it, especially when it begins to show signs of wear. The Department of Veterans Affairs provides clear guidelines for the proper care of the flag. The flag should never touch the ground, floor, or water, and should always be kept aloft and free from damage. It is permissible to display the flag 24 hours a day, but only if it is properly illuminated. It should never be used as clothing, bedding, or for commercial purposes, and it should always be treated with respect. When displayed next to other flags, the American flag must be placed at the top of the flagpole with the union (the stars) in the upper left corner. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously, ensuring that it doesn’t touch the ground during the process. When the flag is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of the nation, it must be retired in a dignified manner. The most respectful way to dispose of a worn flag is by burning it in a ceremony that honors its significance. For those in Cape May County who need to retire an old flag, a flag retirement station is available at Cape May County Park South in Del Haven. This station, part of an Eagle Scout project, allows residents to retire flags respectfully. Local service organizations, including the VFW, DAV, and American Legion, are also available to assist with the proper disposal of flags.
