AVALON, N.J. — Ten people were rescued midmorning Wednesday after a sailboat slammed into the rocks at a jetty in Avalon. Officials report the group became stranded after rough surf and strong winds forced the boat against the rocks around 11 a.m. Avalon Beach Patrol Chief Matt Wolf said emergency crews responded quickly after a distress call. Strong northeast winds kept the sailboat pinned to the jetty, making conditions too dangerous for rescue swimmers to enter the water. Lifeguards used jet skis to assist the stranded group, who were all wearing lifejackets, in reaching safety. Everyone aboard the boat was brought to shore without injury, although the incident left them visibly shaken. The vessel sank shortly after tipping against the rocks. Local authorities closed a nearby beach area temporarily while checking for debris. Officials said the prompt teamwork among beach patrol, emergency responders, and bystanders prevented a tragedy. No serious injuries were reported. The Avalon Yacht Club, involved in the outing, is reviewing its safety procedures.
