Stone Harbor, New Jersey — The Stone Harbor Borough Council is moving forward with a reorganization of the Police Department that will reduce the number of sworn officers from 18 to 17. The plan, introduced May 20, removes the lieutenant position and eliminates the rank of administrative sergeant. Earlier proposals to eliminate the captain position met resistance and have since been revised in collaboration with the department. The borough considered shared services with neighboring municipalities but abandoned the idea after public opposition and no shared-service plans are included in the 2025 budget. This reorganization is part of a broader effort to reduce expenses and remain within the state’s municipal appropriation cap. The council will hold a public hearing on the changes June 17 at 5 p.m. at Borough Hall, with a vote expected afterward.
