GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP – A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service field office in Galloway Township, responsible for protecting endangered species in New Jersey, is set to close due to federal budget cuts implemented by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
The office, located on Jimmie Leeds Road, is among 164 federally leased offices scheduled to be shut down, according to a report from the Democratic House subcommittee on natural resources. The closures are part of a nationwide plan to cut two million square feet of office space as part of an initiative to reduce government spending. This office is the only one in New Jersey that oversees wildlife recovery efforts related to oil spills, Superfund sites, and federal projects that could impact wildlife habitats, including wetlands and beaches. It also plays a critical role in the conservation of endangered species such as bog turtles, red knots, and monarch butterflies. The closure is expected to have a significant impact on local wildlife protection efforts.
