Walgreens | Closing Location: Pleasantville, NJ

Pleasantville -- Walgreens will permanently close its store at 855 North Main Street in Pleasantville on June 23, one of two South Jersey locations affected as the company accelerates its national consolidation strategy. The Pleasantville and Cherry Hill closures are part of Walgreens’ broader plan to shutter 1,200 stores over the next three years. Executives cite declining sales and structural changes in the pharmacy industry as key drivers behind the decision. Customers with active prescriptions at the Pleasantville store will be notified by mail, and medications will be automatically transferred to a nearby Walgreens or another pharmacy of the customer’s choosing. The closest Walgreens is located in Northfield, approximately two miles away. Nearby alternatives also include CVS and Sam’s Club. The announcement comes amid growing instability across the retail pharmacy sector. Rite Aid has reduced its national footprint from over 2,300 locations to just 1,240 in the last two years and expects to close another 100 stores this year. CVS has already eliminated 900 stores since 2022 and plans to shut down 270 more in 2025, while selectively expanding in more profitable areas. Retail pharmacy giants continue to recalibrate as traditional brick-and-mortar models face pressure from changing consumer habits and rising operational costs.
