(San Francisco, CA) — Two small earthquakes shook parts of California early Sunday, felt from the South Bay to Walnut Creek. A 3.5 quake struck just after 7:20 a.m., followed by a 2.6 about 20 minutes later. They are part of a recent increase in small quakes across California, especially in Southern California. On one recent Saturday alone, more than 60 small quakes were recorded, most too weak to be felt. Some of the small earthquakes have happened near Los Angeles. Recent quakes near Compton, Long Beach, and Catalina Island were also felt across the region. Other recent quakes happened farther south and out at sea, like two that struck near Catalina Island within minutes of each other. A 3.4 quake also shook the Bay Area the same weekend. Scientists say these are reminders that a much larger quake could happen along California’s major faults.
