Kuwait Halts Flights After Strike Damages Airport Terminal

Kuwait International Airport suspended all flight operations on Wednesday after drones and missiles struck Terminal 1, causing significant damage and injuring several people, according to Kuwaiti authorities.
Kuwait’s military said in a social media statement that “the Defense Ministry stated that several drones attacked Terminal 1 at Kuwait International Airport as part of the Iranian aggression. The attack caused significant material damage to the terminal and wounded several people, who received the necessary medical treatment.”
Following the strike, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation activated an emergency response plan and halted airport operations. In a statement carried by the state Kuwait News Agency authorities said all arriving and departing flights had been suspended while emergency measures were implemented.
Aircraft were diverted to alternative airports as officials assessed the damage and evaluated conditions at the facility. Authorities said operations would remain suspended until required procedures are completed and the airport is cleared to resume normal activity.
Officials said the attack caused substantial damage to Terminal 1, one of the airport’s primary passenger terminals. While several injuries were reported, authorities did not immediately provide casualty figures.
The airport strike came after overnight reports of sirens in Bahrain and Kuwait, approximately an hour after the United States announced it had struck an empty oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz while the vessel was en route to a port in Iran.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks across the Gulf, saying American military bases were the intended targets. CNN described the exchange as the largest series of attacks in weeks as negotiations continue over ending the conflict.
Earlier, the US military said two Iranian missiles fired toward Kuwait either fell short or broke apart before reaching their target. It also said three missiles launched toward Bahrain were intercepted by US and Bahraini forces.
According to the Revolutionary Guards, the attacks were carried out in response to an American strike on Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. The United States has said that strike followed an Iranian attack.
Reuters previously reported explosions on Qeshm Island, though no additional reports confirmed whether any sites were hit.
