Paratrooper From Connecticut Killed in Southern Lebanon Fighting

An IDF soldier from the Paratroopers Brigade was killed Friday during fighting in southern Lebanon, as Israeli forces continued operations against armed groups in the area.   

The soldier was identified as Sgt. Moshe Yitzchak Hacohen Katz, 22, a fighter in the 890th Battalion. Katz was a member of the Chabad Hasidic movement and had lived in New Haven, Connecticut, before enlisting in the IDF.   

Also on Friday, an officer was seriously wounded and another officer was moderately wounded by anti-tank missile fire during combat with gunmen in southern Lebanon.   

Katz’s father, Mendy Katz, announced his son’s death in a Facebook post. “With unspeakable tragedy I regret to inform you that my 22-year-old son Moshe Yitzchak, a sergeant in the IDF, fell in battle in Lebanon.”   

He added, “My oldest son, with a zest for life and jokes. Burial is tomorrow in Israel. Maybe we only share good news.”   

In a separate message, he wrote, “My heart is shattered and the wound is real,” adding, “May he be a malitz yosher (advocate for merit) for only good things.”   

The death brings the total number of people killed by Hezbollah fire since the start of the fighting to eight, including five soldiers and three civilians.
